Description

bullet The site guide was submitted by Pete Keane in 1992

bullet Description of Site:
A steep, perfect north-facing flat-topped butte. Desert thermals prevalent
in summer months. Afternoon strong winds can come on quickly. Evening
glass-off can be spectacular. Site is visible from Hwy 11 between Madras and
Terrebonne on east side of highway.

Site Protocol:
Don't walk through farmer's fields to get to the site. Stay on National
Grassland Access. Farmer has been OK so far, but has cattle on this land, so
beware. This makes about a 20 minute hike to the base of the hill, followed
by a hike up. Watch for soaring eagles off the northwest side, stay clear of
them.

Other Info:
Nearest facilities in Terrebonne. Must be able to hike to site and up to
launch (no vehicle access).

Landowner Information:
BLM, National Grassland

Above is Pete Keane's original site guide write-up on Haystack, the 1,000'
vertical butte just east of Highway 97 between Terrebonne and Madras. I'll
bet Pete could be talked into updating it for the DAR website. I've flown
Haystack a number of times -- it's a longer hike up than Pine Ridge but
worth it.
